Floor and surface preparation techniques

Floor and surface preparation is key for demarcation and other markings on concrete. Shot blasting, scabbling, planing or grinding can prepare your surfaces depending on your needs, but what is the difference?

Shot blasting

Shot blasting is the process of firing small abrasive steel balls on concrete to remove old markings, and keying the area for new markings. It sounds messy but this is actually a dust-free process as the shot blaster has an integral vacuum to remove debris, which means it’s also suitable for food preparation areas.

Scabbling

Scabbling is used to remove a thin layer of concrete from the surface. Using different flails depending on the requirement, scabbling can remove stains and markings and can provide anti-slip properties to the surface.

Planing

Planing works by reducing the surface level by up to 10mm and is often used for leveling surfaces.

Grinding

We use a handheld grinder to get to those hard to reach areas such as edges and corners that the shot blaster can’t manage.

Preparation of your indoor floors and outdoor surfaces is key as it provides the maximum bond for the markings, increasing their lifespan compared to surfaces that have not been prepared.
